# Bonfire Campus Child Safety Policy and Messaging Rules

> How Bonfire Campus protects students with age-based messaging rules for under 13, 13 and older, and adult users, plus how to report concerns.

Child safety is Bonfire Campus's number one priority. Because Bonfire Campus serves students from middle school through college, who they can message depends on their age. This policy explains those limits and how to report a concern. It applies alongside our [Terms of Service](/terms-of-service) and [Privacy Policy](/privacy-policy).

**Effective date:** 9/30/26

## 1. Our Commitment

Everything on Bonfire Campus is built with student safety in mind. We limit who can talk to whom based on age, keep younger students' conversations inside their school, and give every user a way to report anything that feels unsafe. When safety and convenience conflict, safety comes first.

## 2. Age-Based Messaging Rules

Who a user can message is set by their age:

| Age group | Who they can message |
| - | - |
| **Under 13** | Only teachers in their own groups or classrooms |
| **13 to 17** | Students in their own groups within the same organization |
| **18 and older** | Can send message requests to any other user who is 18 or older |

### Students under 13

Students under the age of 13 can only message teachers in their own groups or classrooms. They cannot message other students, or anyone outside their groups or classrooms.

### Students 13 and older

Students 13 and older can message other students in their own groups, as long as those students belong to the same organization. They cannot message students from other organizations.

### Users 18 and older

Users 18 and older can send message requests to any other user who is also 18 or older. Adults cannot send message requests to users under 18.

<Note>
  These rules are enforced by the Service and cannot be turned off by users.
</Note>

## 3. Reporting Concerns

If a message or user makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, report it right away. You can report concerns in two ways:

* **Report Message button:** use it on any message you believe is inappropriate, harmful, or unsafe.
* **Report User button:** use it on a user's profile if their behavior concerns you.

Reports are reviewed by the Bonfire Campus team. We may remove content, restrict messaging, suspend accounts, or notify the user's organization, depending on the concern. **Information on the enforcement action will not be revealed to the victim user, however, will be shared with the reported user’s organization.**

<Tip>
  If you are a student, you can also tell a trusted adult, such as a parent, guardian, teacher, or school counselor.
</Tip>

If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first.

## 4. Prohibited Behavior

The following are never allowed on Bonfire Campus and may lead to immediate account suspension:

* Trying to get around the age-based messaging rules, for example by giving a false age.
* Grooming, exploiting, or sexually harassing any user, especially a minor.
* Sharing or asking for sexual content involving minors.
* Bullying, threatening, or intimidating any user.
* Asking a minor for personal information, photos, or to move the conversation to another platform.

Where required by law, we report child sexual exploitation to the appropriate authorities.

## 5. Law Enforcement Collaboration

Bonfire Campus works with law enforcement agencies to protect children and respond to threats to their safety. This includes:

* **Reporting to authorities:** when we find content or behavior that suggests a child may be at risk of harm or exploitation, we report it to the appropriate law enforcement agencies and child protection organizations.
* **Responding to legal requests:** we respond to valid legal requests from law enforcement, such as subpoenas, court orders, and warrants, as required by law.
* **Emergency requests:** when there is an imminent risk of death or serious physical harm to a child, we may share information with law enforcement without delay, as allowed by law.
* **Preserving evidence:** we may keep relevant account information and content related to an investigation for as long as needed to support law enforcement.

Law enforcement agencies can submit requests through the Bonfire Campus Support Portal.

## 6. Role of Schools and Organizations

Organizations can manage student and staff accounts and enforce settings on them. Schools are responsible for supervising how their students and staff use the Service, and may be notified when a report involves one of their users.
